This was the last of the Smoothcasts that I recorded with my cohost/ex-wife Carrianne, whose schedule was somehow even harder to work with than mine. She's great because she knows all kind of guys in the Chicago rock scene (intimately...), and even though we had another guy who cancelled on us like fifteen times, she called up Mickey Molinari of the rock band Danger Is My Middle Name and dude dropped everything to get on the show. I'm sure she told him that this was actually a really good idea for his career, and then he showed up and realized that I'm just a dude with a portable studio and decided to stay anyway, which says a lot about him (mostly good).

I guess this is the point where I explain that I've been recording all these Smoothcasts and I haven't been able to actually get them up on the site! Well, now I'm chilling on a comfy couch at my mama's house at a wifi hotspot and decided to put up as many as I could at the same time. The situation is getting better folks! Next month, I'll actually have the internet in my home, if you could even believe it. I know, crazy right?

The biggest surprise to me after all that time away was that Matty found his calling. Growing up, Matty could methodically solve puzzles that would baffle me for hours, and I think he realized that his greatest strength was in taking things apart and putting them back together, which makes him a truly fantastic auto transmission repairman. He still plays the drums, and I'll bet you anything he's not the only mechanic out there that hums tunes from Hello Dolly while restoring a Corvette in a rather manly falsetto. So, average Smoothcast listener, if you're wondering what the areas of Matty's expertise are, you can give this episode a listen and wonder no more. The title has nothing to do with Matty's helpfulness; quite the opposite in fact. NOBODY is more helpful! The problem is, if YOU ask him for help too, he'll never have the time to help the rest of us. 

And please folks, don't hate him for loving DMB. :D

Smoothcast Ep. 17 :: Splattitorium  So, you ask yourself, what could possibly be better than a new Smoothcast on a Monday? How about two! …with Robert! …again! Yay! We talk about his awesome tattoos (because he won’t talk about his lousy tattoos) and our self-loathing, which has really grown to new heights. What’s the deal with horror movies anyway? I’ll let Rob tackle that one. And if you know of any great creative uses of Rob’s time, please be sure to leave a comment at smoothlou.com!

Smoothcast Ep. 16 ::  Sorry for the delay; hopefully your iPod loves you more than mine loves me. Robert and I decided to get together and do a year-end wrap up of our top five flicks of 2008. I’ll let you know what my 6-10 are, Wall-E, Pineapple Express, Slumdog Millionaire, In Bruges and Elegy. With a list like that, my top five must be pretty awesome, right? I’ll leave that for you to decide. We had some serious disagreements, as Rob only likes a movie if he walks away known a new way to disembowel someone, but ya know, that’s like, his opinion man. Let the debates begin!

You were wondering where it went, and here it is, the mystical episode 13. Where did it go? Why was it gone? Is it back for good? Who is this Rob character and why did the entire podcast have to be re-recorded? All good questions, some of which were answered. Rob watches a lot of TV, and I take him to task for enjoying a show that I find particularly lame while simultaneously vaunting The Wire, which you should know by now is the greatest show of all time. We talk about movies, we talk about music, and all in all, it was a damn successful podcast.

We are starting to have regulars on the show, which comes from me realizing that most people I know would be rubbish on a radio show, regardless of how much I like them. Carrianne and Tina are back, along with Ed who was just on Ep. 12 last month. After months of great sound, I somehow managed to mess it up again, or maybe Carianne and Tina are cursed, both of which are entirely possible; I managed to lose my brand new microphone somewhere between Alil's house and Tina's house, much to my chagrin. Just like last time, these girls talk and talk and talk with Ed and I getting in a few words in edgewise, including our New Years' Resolutions, which somehow turned into a group therapy session for the girls. Ah well, I promise to make next years Smoothcasts just as entertaining with far less clipping. Thanks for listening!

There's nothing better about Christmas than when you're getting ready to put away the tree and you find a little gem of a present that you didn't notice before. It was hiding in plain sight the whole time but you were so filled with post-Christmas cheer (read: booze) you didn't even see it! The best part of it is, the gift has your name on it! Well friends, Smoothcast Ep. 14 is that lovely present. Join Alil the Christmas-celebrating Muslim guy, and Brian the anonymous middle school teacher (who doesn't want the publicity that comes from being on the world-renowned Smoothcast, apparently), drink some leftover eggnog, and let your worries and cares fester on the sidelines for an hour or so.

Ep. 12 - Whoomp! There it is :: With the holidays upon us, it is important to remember why we all gather together with our families. For Smooth Lou’s family, it is the gravely serious, earth-shattering, life-ruining mockery of our siblings and cousins. I know, it sounds terrible, but is it even a holiday gathering if nobody is crying into their turkey? My brother Pauly finally agreed to be on this podcast, and I manage to poke fun at his high-school age naivete without him coming back at me about that time I pooed my pants on the way home from school. The silent partner in all of this is my favorite artist/gallery owner/straggler/food-horker Polish Ed, AKA Ed Nowiszewski. Special cameos include my crazy sister Laura from a few episodes back; baby Franky, in what I can only assume is his first podcast appearance; and even my old man, shouting about some damn thing in the background!

Ep. 11 - Touch The Sky :: It’s almost Thanksgiving! Who’s ready for some turkey? Not me. Kristen sounds well prepared though, ready to cook for over a dozen people, none of which will want an appletini in a man’s glass (don’t judge me!). She flies for a great big airline that shall remain unnamed, but she dishes about all kinds of great stuff, including the mile-high club, getting struck by lightning, and folding jizzy-blankets. Gross I know, but what can you expect, it’s Smoothcast for crying out loud!

Ep. 10 - Anything Can Happen :: We finally got Jarvis on, and we went straight to talking politics before delving into other things. Many questions were raised; we’re both Obama fans, but still, aren’t you getting sick of hearing about him? How is Jesse Jackson like LL Cool J? How much can be changed in 4 years exactly? Are we going to stand in line for bread omglolwtf? And of course, Smoothcast is the only ‘cast that can start off with Barack Obama and end up talking about Boner from Growing Pains. We talk tokenism, but neither of us is really sure of what the word means.

In Part II we reminisce on colleges that we hated, jobs we hated, the demise of newspapers in America; man, get Jarvis talking, and he won’t shut up! Here’s a little phone etiquette friends, don’t call your friends names via answering machine…not a good idea. You know what else is not a good idea? Killing people for money, as a rule. Ep. 9 - Juicy ::  Robert is back in episode 9, answering the question that’s been haunting you since episode 1, and adds some new questions altogether: What horrors did partygoers encounter seeing Robert’s creepy eyeball? Why are conversations with my friends better than listening to celebrities yammer on and on? Where’s the best place to get some rubdown action out there? Some of these are answered, but to protect the innocent (and the guilty), I’ll let you all figure out the answer to that last one on your own.

Part II was supposed to be all about Jackie, but wouldn’t you know it? Robert needed to interject… A lot. As we all try to get a word in edgewise, we manage to annoy Robert heartily with discussions on Britney Spears, whether movie remakes are ever better than the originals, and whether Michael Jackson plans to team up with India to take over the world!

Ep. 8 Roll Out (My Business) :: So Thursday came and went without a new podcast and we were actually ready to throw in the towel this week when who other than Smooth Lou’s sister Laura came to the rescue! Frank comes by too, and we discuss delicious pies, the merits of Chicano cinema, his terrible fear of roller skates, and the question that nags us all, is Frank more of a chunky Leonardo DiCaprio, or a morbidly obese John Travolta? These questions and more will be answered on Smoothcast Episode 8! 

Smoothcast Episode 7 :: Se7en's Travels Smooth Lou goes back to his musical roots with special guests Muff 7 this week, which happened to be Episode 7 which happened to be recorded on the day after October 7 (AKA October 8)! We talk about Smooth Lou's first real show in the in a great venue, the prolificity (is that a word? Spell check says no, but we say yes!) of good rappers, or more accurately, our own ungodly laziness, and whether Cancer is funnier than AIDS. No, really. It gets pretty tasteless toward the middle there, in case you couldn't tell. THANKS PETEY.

In part II we cover such diverse topics as *deep breath* Muff 7's plans for the rest of the year, going on Maury Povich's show, being brown in Minneapolis, perverse science, Smooth Lou's insatiable appetite and the iPhone's stiff competitor, the HiPhone. Ahh Chinese Engineering, you will one day destroy us all.

Ep. 6 - Movies for the Blind :: Mario is a man who loves movies, so I had him on to talk about the big movies this fall. What does that have to do with Bread’s easy listening tune “If”? Wouldn’t you like to know! Is Text messaging the downfall of society? It might be, but will Family Guy ruin it first? All this and more, on Smoothcast Episode 6!

Ep. 5 - Old School :: Oh dear God what have we done on Smoothcast Episode 5? Special guests Heather Dahlstrom, Jessica Beck, and Vanessa de Leon discuss being a decade out of high school, getting eaten by sharks, the possibility of a nacho bar, and... oh, did I mention horrible slander? Well, technically, it's only slander if it's not true, right? Either way, sorry about the edits, they are pretty wacky, but it was the only way to avoid potential lawsuits. The comedy's all there folks, enjoy!

Ep. 4 - Boyz-N-The-Hood :: Rob and Kevin get over their first show jitters pretty quick here and jump headfirst into some serious subjects, including butchering foreign words in English (Des Plaines, I’m looking at you). Rob and Kevin want to talk Sports Trivia, but Smooth Lou keeps derailing the conversation back to what he learned about Sports from watching too much TV. So, what would it take you guys out there to get a Wangoplasty? And more importantly, what’s up with Kevin’s strange affinity for Cuba Gooding Jr. (or possibly his hatred of Denzel Washington?)

Part II starts with a possibly serious conversation on the horrors of 9/11 but gets interrupted by talk about MTV, Las Vegas and zombies! And finally, is Facebook really a CIA Front? Hard to say, but we perpetuate the myth anyway.

Ep. 3 - Magic Number :: Three is the Magic Number folks. Mafisto Moriarty promised to make it three times in a row and guess what? He finally made it. We talk about selling music (or, better yet, not selling music), Scribble Jam, and how our favorite Cincinnati residents are from 2 hours away! In part two, we eulogize Don LaFontaine, discuss the end of days, and questions on Lou's dimples make us all feel uncomfortable. Oh, and get this: it sounds FANTASTIC.

Ep. 2 - All Men R Dawgz :: What do you get when you add two saucy girls and Smooth Lou into one steamy apartment? Smoothcast Episode 2! Join us, and find out Where Waldo has been hiding (ladies beware!), where summer went, and why all we men want is booty. What can I say? They got me on that last part.
